The 600-tonne lattice boom crawler crane — one of Havator’s largest — had to be reserved months ahead to lift the 39-metre hull of the Swan 128, BeCool, from its cradle in Jakobstad and lower it into Nautor Swan’s purpose-built water pit for launch operations.
Design, plug and mould: compact logistics at Kållby and Jakobstad
Initial naval architecture was led by Germán Frers with exterior styling by Lucio Micheletti and interiors by Misa Poggi. The project evolved from a Swan 98 owner’s brief and required iterative hull and interior loops; a late decision to add a laundry room extended the original hull by four feet.
To produce the first all-carbon Swan 128, Nautor Swan manufactured a wooden plug at its plug-and-mould facility in Kållby. The upside-down plug formed the base for a monolithic full-carbon mould, a process that demanded precise road transport and a 180° rotation once the mould arrived at the Boatbuilding Technology Center (BTC) in Jakobstad.
At a glance: major technical suppliers and parts
- Hull and deck materials: Gurit carbon prepreg and Corecell core
- Ụgbọ mmiri: North Sails (main, fore triangle, jib, asymmetric spinnaker)
- Mast and boom: Southern Spars (mast tube from New Zealand, boom from Spain)
- Rigging: Future Fibres (produced in Sri Lanka)
- Cranes and heavy lift: Havator (600-tonne lattice boom plus auxiliary cranes)
Hull and deck manufacture: sequence and thermal control
The hull and deck followed a Sprint© carbon prepreg workflow with vacuum infusion, then a digitally controlled two-stage post-cure reaching up to 90°C for about 20 hours. Carbon bulkheads, girders and keel floors were installed while the hull remained in the mould, enabling subsequent de-moulding and final faired surface preparation.
Timeline table: key milestones
| Stage | Date | Key actions |
|---|---|---|
| Design loop | Late 2021–Mid 2022 | Owner inputs and hull length adjustment |
| Plug and mould | June 2022–Feb 2023 | Wooden plug built, carbon mould infilled, transported and split |
| Hull lamination | 2023 | Carbon layup, post-cure, de-moulding and pre-paint show coat |
| Outfitting | 2024 | Systems, joinery, deck assembly and rigging deliveries |
| After deck & launch | 2025 | Keel installation, mast stepping and May launch |
Outfitting, transport choreography and international sourcing
Outfitting concentrated on tanks, batteries, piping and cabling before the carbon deck underwent dry fitting. While local teams worked on joinery and teak decking, large components were freighted from overseas: the 57-metre mast tube travelled from New Zealand as deck cargo, reloaded via Belgium to Jakobstad, and rigging came from Sri Lanka. These multi-leg logistics legs required precise port schedules and timetables so onshore and offshore teams could synchronise.
Critical operations and margins
The telescopic keel — yielding a draft range from 4.4 m to 6.7 m — and a nearly 35-tonne ballast assembly demanded a day with two crane lifts and exact engineering clearances. Weather windows controlled several critical lifts, including the mast stepping and the hull launch; poor wind on earlier attempts underlined the sensitivity of launch scheduling in the Gulf of Bothnia.
