Recent observations by the Sea Turtle Research, Rescue and Rehabilitation Center (DEKAMER) confirmed the establishment of 10 nests for endangered loggerhead sea turtles (Caretta caretta) at İztuzu Beach in Muğla’s Ortaca district.

During the active nesting season, DEKAMER teams and volunteers have been diligently working to monitor and protect the vulnerable eggs from natural predators. To safeguard the nests, protective cages have been installed, and detailed observations are being maintained to monitor the hatching progress.

Project Assistant Biologist Fatih Polat noted that initial nesting was recorded on April 29, with the current total reaching around 10 nests. The incubation period for the eggs varies from 45 to 60 days. He adds, “We expect to see the highest number of nests in June, with hatchlings likely to emerge as early as mid-July.”

This picturesque beach remains a crucial nesting site for the Caretta caretta species in the Mediterranean and plays a pivotal role in regional conservation efforts.

Community Cleanup in Marmaris

Marmaris recently participated in the nationwide “The Forest is Mine” initiative, spearheaded by the Ministry of Agriculture and Forestry.
