MOTIVE Festival Overview

The MOTIVE Crime & Mystery Festival is approaching, now set to take place at the scenic Victoria University, within the renowned University of Toronto.   • 3-Day Festival Pass: $75 Regular | $45 Under 25

While passes are necessary for attending author talks and presentations, those marked as FREE on the schedule do not require tickets. Additionally, certain masterclasses have separate registration requirements.

Masterclasses

Offering an enriching opportunity, MOTIVE’s Creative Writing Masterclasses focus on developing dynamic narratives and unforgettable characters through hands-on instruction led by celebrated authors and industry experts. Each session spans 90 minutes and welcomes participants of all writing levels.

University of Toronto Workshops

The University of Toronto returns to host a series of free forensic science workshops and lectures, acclaimed for their informative content. Registration is required to secure a spot in these highly sought-after sessions:

  • The Answer at Your Fingertips: Ridge Patterns in Criminal Investigation – June 28 at 11 AM & 2:30 PM
  • Forensic Anthropology Workshop: June 29 at 11 AM
  • Right Down to the Bone: The Identity of Jane Doe – June 30 at 2 PM

Outdoor Events

Join conversations and panel discussions in the outdoor quad, diving into the nuances of writing, publishing, and the intriguing history of Toronto. On both Saturday and Sunday, Toronto Crime Tours will share their harrowing insights accumulated over 30 years as detectives. The Crime Writers of Canada (CWC), a national non-profit supporting Canadian crime and mystery writers, will host panels and maintain an information tent. On Saturday night, the festival will present A Murder Most Proper: an interactive murder mystery collaboration with BarTeam Theatre, featuring live music and beverages. Set in 1930s England, the only thing more scandalous than a sudden death is the underlying impropriety!

Festival Bookstore

The festival bookstore, operated by the University of Toronto Bookstore, will be situated in Room 115, located just off the main lobby of Victoria College. Attendees can peruse the complete MOTIVE 2025 reading list there.

Saturday: 10:30 AM – 9 PM
Sunday: 10:30 AM – 6 PM

Book signings will happen in the Victoria College lobby following each event, with events in the Isabel Bader Theatre offering remote book sales and signings in the theatre lobby.

Getting to Victoria University at the University of Toronto

Festival weekend is expected to be bustling on and around the University of Toronto campus. Therefore, it’s advisable for attendees to plan their travel in advance and allow for additional time to navigate any potential delays or congestion.

Subway Directions

From Museum Station

  • Follow the ROM signs upon arrival at Museum Station.
  • Exit at Queen’s Park and proceed up the stairs.
  • At the top, turn left and keep left at the fork.
  • Cross at the pedestrian crosswalk.
  • Keep left and continue walking straight.
  • Ascend the ramp or stairs leading to Victoria College!

From Bay Station

  • Upon reaching Bay Station, follow signs to Bay Street and Bellair Street.
  • Go up the stairs and turn right at the top.
  • Walk south, crossing Bloor Street, and continue south for another block to Charles Street.
  • Turn right and head west until you see the Isabel Bader Theatre on the left.
  • Cross the street and proceed down the side road beside the theatre’s main entrance.
  • Continue walking, then take a left to enter Victoria College!
